In emergency medical situations, seconds can make a difference. For example, in cases of cardiac arrest, severe trauma, or significant respiratory distress, the fast transport to a medical facility can be life-saving. Therefore, Code 3 is appropriate when a delay could lead to a deterioration of the patient's condition or even death.

Other circumstances, such as avoiding traffic, training purposes, or public events, do not hold the same level of urgency or necessity for lights and sirens. Using Code 3 solely for those reasons can unnecessarily endanger other road users and could be considered misapplication of emergency response protocols.
